Duty to God

Please select the link above for more details....

The God and Church (6-8th grades)  program will lead young people on a journey. It will be a faith journey with three parts: meeting Jesus, worshiping God, and witnessing and ministering for Christ. Participants will create either a video or a photo album to share what they have learned on their faith journeys. Young people will have the opportunity to work with their pastor or other Christian adult as they study the church's structures and objectives and participate in service projects that will give them a better understanding of the mission of the church.

The students in the God and Life program (9th - 12th grades) will seek to understand their call to a life of discipleship. God and Life is based on the life of the Apostle Paul as recorded in Acts 9:1-31.

·       Section 1: God Calls All Kinds of People

·       Section 2: God Doesn’t Expect Us to Do It On Our Own

·       Section 3: Each of Us Must Make a Personal Response to the Call of God.

·       Section 4: God Gives Strength to Face Adversities.

·       Section 5: God Can Accomplish Great Things Through Those Who are Willing to Do God's Will.

Curriculum Goals:

To provide opportunities for young people to:

·       Strengthen their relationship with Christ

·       Be open to God’s calling in their lives

·       Make a plan for daily Bible reading

·       Experience the joy of serving others

·       Write a statement of commitment

Update on 3/1

It's been a blessing spending time doing "God, Church and Life"! Here's the update:

1) We will split into 2 classes, High School and Middle School this week. High School will continue to meet in the Quiet Room. Middle School will meet in 214. Rev. Pitts will be co-leading the middle school class from herein.

2) All: Please, please, please complete the 90 day Bible reading requirement. The "Daily Bread" and the Book of Proverbs are recommended.

3) High School: Please GIVE YOUR PARENTS their green "God and Life" BOOK and bring your book to class.

4) Middle school: Please be sure that pages 4,5 and 7-10 are complete. Also please complete the photo albmun requirement by April 4th (Easter). The assignment is described in the workbooks in the "Picture This!" areas. An easy way to tackle it would be to make a collage on a color copier. One or two trips to Kinkos and it can be complete.

We covered a LOT during this week's class:

  • How the early church felt. Acts 2:46-47
  • That Jesus is the head of the church and the church is His body. Eph 1:23.
  • The start of the Baptist denomination and key beliefs, i.e. God's Word is without error. Also what beliefs we share with all Christians, Jesus is fully man and fully God. We also covered that God doesn't divide Christians by denomination (Ephesians 4:4-6) and that we are mature as we are like Christ.
  • That we meet people through people and some people may need to meet Jesus through you!
  • Zion's mission statement "win souls and build up the body of Christ" and the source: Eph 4:11-16. The church's vision: a refuge from the storms of life.
  • Zion's history: established in 1871. By comparison, the average Fortune 500 company's life span is 40-50 years. So, a church started that many years ago is still here by faith!

I encourage spending time talking about these points because we could not spend very much time on them in class.

May the love of Christ guide us always,

Rev. Alan Ryan

Update on 2/9

We had a great second session of God, Church and Life. Here are this week's action items and follow up notes:

1) Daily Bible reading for 90 days is a requirement of the class and for the badge. Everyone was provided a 90 day "Daily Bread". One day should be read each day-with the page being checked off. That coupled with reading the book of Proverbs will fulfill this requirement. Discussing the Daily Bread devotionals at home is highly encouraged. If desired, a Daily Bread may be viewed on www.rbc.net

2) The high school students will be asked to summarize at least one day of the Daily Bread for the class each week.

3) We will have another session this coming Sunday, 8:30am. Ideally parents would go through the parent guide and student guide with your children.

4) This week we talked about the divine nature of Jesus, being the Son of God. Jesus defined Himself as Lord. So, either He was telling the truth (we know He was) or??? This devotional was handed out.  PLEASE do the attached devotional.

Many people witnessed the resurrection and Jesus' other miracles. The NT authors wrote when contemporaries of Jesus were still living. Hence, if there were any untruths to what was stated-the eye witnesses would have washed away the stories of His miracles-similar to like how we ignore the ridiculous stuff in the National Enquirer.

May the love of Christ guide us always,

In the first session we covered the humanity, fame and reality of Jesus Christ.

  • The NT has more documentation with 5,686 ancient texts than any other historical document. The second most has 610. Hence, the historical accuracy of the life of Jesus Christ has more documentation than all of the rest of ancient history. "Unshakeable Foundations" by Geisler is an amazing book loaded with these kinds of facts. We briefly outlined some of the key events in the life of Jesus.
  •  We also covered the various emotions Jesus experienced, joy, love, anguish, etc. which allows Him to fully identify with what we experience. In addition to the workbook we used Luke 10:21, Mark 10:21, John 11:5, John 19:26.
  • Lastly, we reviewed "One Solitary Life"

In an obscure village, He was born to a peasant woman. He grew up in another obscure village, where He worked as a carpenter until He was thirty. For 3 years He was a preacher. He never had a family home. He never traveled 200 miles from His birthplace. He never wrote a book or held office. He never traveled to a big city. He did not of the things considered to be a part of greatness. While he was still young, the tide of popular opinion turned against Him. His friends deserted Him. He was turned over to His enemies. He was nailed to a cross between two thieves. When He was dead, He was taken down and laid in a borrowed grave. Two thousand years have passed, and today He is the central figure for much of the human race. All the armies that ever marched and all the navies that ever sailed and all the parliaments that ever sat, and all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man as powerfully as this "One Solitary Life".

Be blessed!

Rev. Alan Ryan
